BIG4LIFE green roofs, a research space for urban biodiversity

One of the most important ecosystem services provided by green roofs and facades is their support for biodiversity in urban environments. In this context, the BIG4LIFE project is collaborating on a master’s Thesis within the master’s in Integrated Pest Management at the University of Lleida, focusing on arthropods as biodiversity indicators.

The research, carried out by student Anna Cristina Tellez under the supervision of researchers Xavier Pons and Alexandre Levi, aims to determine how different types of green roofs can enhance the presence of beneficial species. Weekly sampling is being conducted on two of the project’s pilot roofs: the one at the Agrobiotech Park (BIG1) and the one on Ronda La Mercè (BIG2), in Lleida.

The findings will enhance our understanding of the ecological value of green infrastructure and inform more effective designs for promoting urban biodiversity.
