BIG4LIFE selected as LIFE Project of the Month by the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition

BIG4LIFE recognised as LIFE Project of the Month

The European project BIG4LIFE has been selected by the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) as a featured project in its “LIFE Project of the Month” initiative. The recognition highlights the project’s contribution to urban nature-based solutions, sustainable building management and climate adaptation in Mediterranean environments.

A European initiative supporting greener cities

BIG4LIFE addresses one of the main challenges of Building Integrated Greenery (BIG): ensuring the long-term maintenance, monitoring and management of green roofs and green façades under Mediterranean climate conditions.

Coordinated by the University of Lleida, the project brings together universities, research centres, companies and social organisations from several European countries, including the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC).

The project combines xerogardening approaches, digital monitoring technologies and collaborative maintenance models to improve the environmental, social and economic benefits delivered by urban green infrastructure.

Delivering measurable impact

Since its launch in September 2023, BIG4LIFE has rehabilitated several green roofs, deployed intelligent monitoring systems and developed cost-benefit methodologies to demonstrate the value of nature-based solutions in urban environments.

Among its achievements:

  • 10 monitored Building Integrated Greenery projects
  • 2 collaborative maintenance and monitoring networks
  • 65% reduction in irrigation water consumption
  • More than 1,000 people informed or trained through project activities

Supporting the New European Bauhaus

BIG4LIFE contributes to the objectives of the New European Bauhaus by promoting sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion through urban renaturalisation and biodiversity enhancement.
